Email list monetisation

How much is an email list worth?

An email list is worth the future revenue it can reliably generate, discounted for risk. In practice that comes out to roughly 1 to 5 GBP per active engaged contact per year for a healthy permissioned consumer list, and considerably more for high-intent B2B or buyer lists. The number is set by deliverable rate, engagement, monetisation model and consent quality, not by raw list size.

The simple valuation formula

Annual revenue per contact x expected active years = lifetime value per contact. Multiply by the number of active contacts to get a list value.

For a healthy permissioned consumer list with a steady offer mix, annual revenue per contact typically lands in the 5 to 25 GBP range. Average customer life on a well-run list is two to four years. That puts a contact somewhere between 10 and 100 GBP of lifetime value, with most consumer lists clustering at the lower end and high-intent buyer lists at the top.

You can model this for your own list directly in the Email list revenue calculator.

The factors that move the number

Deliverable rate

If 30% of the list bounces or sits in spam, 30% of the value disappears. Deliverability is the single biggest lever on valuation.

Engagement

Open and click rates tell a buyer how much of the file is actually a relationship and how much is dead weight. Lists with sub-10% open rates are heavily discounted.

Consent quality

Single opt-in from a co-reg flow is worth less than double opt-in from a first-party signup. Records of consent source, timestamp and wording protect the valuation.

Offer fit and monetisation model

A list of mortgage seekers is worth more per contact to a lender than to a fashion brand. The same contact carries different value to different buyers.

Recency and frequency

Lists mailed regularly with clean metrics are worth more than dormant ones, because the next buyer does not have to pay to wake them up.

A rule of thumb

For a quick sanity check: take the last twelve months of attributable email revenue, divide by the average active contact count over the same period, and you have a defensible annual value per contact. Multiply by two to four to get a lifetime figure. That is the number that survives a buyer's due diligence.

Why size alone is misleading

A million addresses sounds impressive until you see that 400,000 bounce, 300,000 never engage and 100,000 have not been mailed in eighteen months. The active engaged file may be 200,000, and that is the list a buyer is actually paying for. Cleaning up first usually increases sale value because what is left is provably good.

Frequently asked questions

What is the average value of an email subscriber?

For permissioned consumer lists, 10 to 50 GBP in lifetime value is a normal range. For high-intent B2B and buyer lists, 100 GBP and up per contact is common.

Does list size or engagement matter more for valuation?

Engagement, by a wide margin. A small engaged list reliably out-earns and out-values a large disengaged one, and buyers know it.

Can I sell my email list?

Selling a list outright is restricted under UK GDPR and PECR and is rarely the best route. Licensing access via a managed sender or running a revenue-share programme is usually more valuable and stays compliant.
